Sonic Skills Public Day
Friday January 17, 2014
Groote Societeit, Vrijthof 36, 6211 LE, Maastricht

On January 17-18, 2014, a group of Sound Studies experts will come together at Maastricht University to comment on the Sonic Skills project, a project that studies sound and listening as entrances for acquiring knowledge in twentieth-century science, engineering and medicine. The meeting will start with a Public Day on Friday January 17, during which several of the experts will present their own research on cultures of sound and listening, past and present, in short and accessible English language presentations.

To follow-up on the Mega Data: Challenges and Opportunities” workshop in April four additional workshops have been arranged under the heading “Dealing with Data: developing a roadmap.”

The workshops are as follows:

1: A roadmap towards a plan for scientific data publication and retrieval
Date:
October 28th, 10am – 4pm.
Location:
Faculty Library of Natural and Health Sciences, Nørre Allé 49 2200 Copenhagen N

This workshop will deal with issues related to publishing and retrieving scientific / research data, in the sense that the data in question is either directly related to a publication – e.g. a scientific article or book – or that data is published by means of an established scholarly publishing channel.

Workshop 2: Metadata
Date:
November 11th, 10am – 4pm
Location:
Emil Holms Kanal, building 22, Auditorium 22.0.11, 2300 Copenhagen S

How do we generate useful and shareable metadata? How do we qualify, preserve, share and display metadata?  How do we use metadata in an ethically responsible way? Who owns metadata? These will be some of the questions raised and discussed during this seminar focusing on common metadata solutions across faculties and disciplines.

Workshop 3: A roadmap towards data sharing across disciplines and national borders

October 28 – November 3, 2013

re-new 2013 mixes and mingles artistic and academic works and practices in novel settings, to emphasize The Big Picture as a real but open-ended fusion of media art, media technology and science. The customary delimitation of expert areas is necessary for gathering specific knowledge or executing a particular work. But the multi-disciplinary nature of media art, -analysis and -usage requires a wider contextualizing and a bigger overview: this is where we need to visit The Big Picture.

soundsignatures

Location and Date: The Sound Studies Winter and Summer School is scheduled to take place on January 13-17, 2014 at the University of Amsterdam (NICA) and on August 18-22, 2014, at NYU and the Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science.

Objectives

The two schools will focus on the notion of “sound signatures” as a way to reconsider sound as a phenomenon that is highly bound to specific media, material cultures, and related discursive systems. It invites graduate students from different disciplines to investigate the connection of sound to particular contexts and fields of action: social, scientific and artistic practices, embodied skills, objects, technologies and media, architectural and environmental designs.
