Is chess the perfect game for radio? An abstract past-time for a medium that’s blind? Forget for a moment the aesthetic appeal of those beautifully-carved pieces, or the patterns they make on the board. That’s superficial stuff. Below the surface, it’s all deep, pure thought. Which is why, back in the eighteenth century, the French teenage-chess-sensation Philidor covered his eyes with a scarf before playing. In blindfolding himself, he was, I think, making it easier to win, not harder. Read more and listen at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00wfxh3

The last month we have focussed on two main activities: 1) a joint seminar with the archive at DR, where we discussed metadata both the potential of the exisiting metadata and metadata schema at DR as well as the vision for LARM metadata and annotations, and 2) a survey of the information needs of scholars working with audiotory materials – with the other WP5s as respondents. A new seminar with DR is being planned, and most survey replies are in – we are currently chasing up the last missing respondents.

Informationsmøde for alle interesserede: Onsdag d. 15/12 kl. 16-17:30

Sounds from Denmark

6. december 2010 | Posted by | Category: other-news

http://soundsfromdenmark.org/ This is a public service site. Hopefully, it will provide a unique way of exploring Danish audio culture, for those of you who seek a richer understanding of this small Scandinavian country. Our focus here is on creating and distributing what we call Sound Pictures (Danish: hørebilleder), captured moments and spaces recorded in Denmark. If you are coming here and want to get some sense of this little country, we want you to listen and reflect on what you hear. If you are living here, we would like you listen, and contribute your own sound pictures of Denmark.

Seminarrække om Kollektive Forestillingsmønstre 15.december 2010 kl. 15-17 Lokale 21.2.04, Nye KUA Ash, Snow and Shattered Remains: Archives of Recent German-Language Literature Dora Osborne, Wadham College, Oxford Returning to Jacques Derrida’s seminal text, Archive Fever, this paper will consider how a shift from discourses of memory to those of the archive has affected recent German-language literature in its work of remembering and commemorating the past. Whilst an increasing temporal distance from the events of the Second World War and the Holocaust mean authors turn to documentary, archival material to piece together an understanding of these events, such tangible things are revealed to be as fragile as memory. I will look briefly at W. G. Sebald’s Die Ringe des Saturn, Durs Grünbein’s Porzellan and Christoph Ransmayr’s Der fliegende Berg in order to show how material remainders are used in the reconstructive work of narrative. Via links to authors of a more immediate postwar phase, as well as to visual artists, I will consider how the archive materials in their works are bound to fiction as much as to fact.

IASA 2011 annual conference The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives welcomes you to IASA 2011 – Frankfurt, 3-8 September, 2011 Call for Presentations Digital Sense and Nonsense: Digital Decision Making in Sound and Audiovisual Collections Digital has been with us for many years now, so much so that there is little disagreement in the sound and audiovisual world that digitising our heritage collection is the best way to preserve and sustain access to our valuable content. Virtually all new materials are now collected in digital form so there is little choice but to manage our digital collections if we want to keep them for future users. There are many examples of digital strategies working well, and many new initiatives which expand the number of users we reach and the way we use our collections. So why is there still so much discussion, so much concern? Why are there still so many complex decisions to make? Is it just that there are big hopes but bumpy roads, big promises but limited resources, incredible semantic possibilities but illegible road signs.

CHAOS 1.1 beta – næsten klar.

1. december 2010 | Posted by | Category: larm-news
